Ask a client what finishes they want and you'll often hear a single word: marble, wood, glass. But the material name is only the starting point. The difference between a flat, plasticky render and one that feels tactile almost always comes down to how a material is actually behaving on the surface, not what it's called in the brief.

Real marble is never one uniform tone. It has veining that shifts direction, subtle pitting, and a reflectivity that changes depending on how recently it's been polished. We build these variations in deliberately, because a perfectly uniform slab is one of the fastest tells that a space isn't real.

Wood carries the same logic. Grain direction has to follow how a carpenter would actually lay a floor, and finish sheen has to match whether we're depicting a matte site-finished floor or a glossy factory laminate. Get the sheen wrong and a warm oak floor can read as cheap vinyl.

Glass and metal are where restraint matters most. Over-reflective glass makes a facade look like a mirror instead of a building; over-polished steel can make hardware look like chrome trim on a car. We calibrate reflectivity against real photographic reference so these materials support the architecture instead of distracting from it.

None of this is about adding complexity for its own sake. It's about making sure that when a buyer studies a still image closely, closer than they'd ever study a passing glance at a real building, nothing about the surface breaks the illusion.
